Still a bit 'young' seeming, even though it's now almost 10 years old! Dark dark dark, and dry. This wine is more austere than you might expect - the tannins are finally smoothing out and it has become a serious dinner companion.
Fresher and fruitier than it's Italian counterparts, Barolo and Barbaresco, but still VERY 'Nebbiolo'. Sour cherry, orange peels, and rose aromas waft from the surface of this young wine, producing an expectation of luxury. But, it is teasing. The light body, tight tannins and slightly acidic twang and persistent bright cherry make this a brilliantly food-friendly wine. Or, wait 5 or 10 years and watch it mellow.
Sharp earthy dark chocolate aroma with deep berry and caramel flavors. Finishing slightly tannic with lingering fruit.
Surprisingly fruity for a wine that is over 10 years old. Besides being unusual due to it's age, this Cabernet is unusual in that it is slightly 'Amarone' style. This is a technique whereby the grapes are dried out slightly before fermentation, resulting in a multi-layered, concentrated treat. Figs, dates and a hint of leather represent the drying process to the nose, and smooth milk chocolate cherries and a hint of port fill your mouth with concentrated flavor. Smooth tannins indicate the age of this California Cabernet that is still maintaining good acid.
